Background

Sports betting is on the rise, both in Australia and internationally. With sports betting apps available on smartphones and tablets, dedicated websites, and traditional venues and bookies, sports betting is now more accessible than ever before.

Despite increasing community concern about the normalisation of young people’s drinking and sports betting behaviours, we have limited understanding of the relationship between these behaviours, the contexts in which they happen together, and the potential harms associated with this.

About the project

The ‘Pints, Punts ‘n Peers’ project aims to understand the relationship between alcohol consumption and sports betting (including race betting) among young Australians.

This research will explore drinking and betting behaviours, including when these occur at the same time. Using an online survey and follow-up interviews with young Australians aged 18-35, this study will explore topics such as patterns, settings and contexts of simultaneous alcohol and sports betting consumption, motivations, and impacts on health and wellbeing.

We hope that our findings will provide helpful information for young people, their families, policy makers, and support services.
