Report—Income, poverty and inequality

Report—Income, poverty and inequality

9 February 2018

This paper uses data from the 2006, 2011 and 2016 censuses to analyse the geographic variation in Indigenous income, poverty and inequality.

This report has been published by the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, based at the Australian National University (ANU).

The report analyses the distribution of income within the Indigenous population, and been Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. The findings show a growing disparity between the incomes of Indigenous people within urban and rural communities. Changes in the difference in the incomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians followed a similar pattern, with income gaps shrinking in urban areas while growing rapidly in very remote areas.
