A fairer future for grandchildren: Understanding the impact of the caring role on grandparents raising their grandchildren

A fairer future for grandchildren: Understanding the impact of the caring role on grandparents raising their grandchildren

22 June 2021

This report looks at the issues and needs of grandparent carers in Western Australia.

This report has been produced by Wanslea Family Services, Edith Cowan University and Curtin University.

This report highlights findings from a research study on the impact of the caring role on both formal and informal grandparent carers and the gaps in services and supports.

Five key themes were identified:

  • the exacerbation of poverty due to the impact on income and employment
  • complex and inequitible systems for informal carers, due to their lack of legal recognition
  • poorer wellbeing and health than other older people
  • the trauma and joy of the new role
  • the specific challenges and higher social support for Aboriginal carers.
