In this seminar, Professor Bynner provided a brief historic overview of longitudinal studies and highlight their connection with life course study. Professor Bynner then discussed the technological, methodological and theoretical development underlying the transformation of the modern studies into large scale research resources, shaped by both policy and scientific interest. Examples were given of the policy value gained from their expansion focusing on family and child issues. The seminar concluded with challenges faced in the next stage of the studies' drawing on the work of the UK Cohorts and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resource (CLOSER).
