Information Publication Scheme and Agency Plan
The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS or the Institute) is an agency subject to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and is required to comply with the Information Publication Scheme (IPS) requirements. The Scheme requires that Agencies publish a range of information on their website.

Who we are
The AIFS Executive team consists of the Director and two Deputy Directors.
We are located at level 20, 485 La Trobe St, Melbourne 3000.
The Director of the Institute is a statutory appointment under the Family Law Act (1975). The AIFS Statement of Intent can be located on the AIFS Corporate Information page.

What we do
AIFS is the Australian Government’s key research body in the area of family wellbeing.
AIFS is a research organisation. It does not administer government programs or exercise executive power.
The Institute was established in February 1980 under the Australian Family Law Act 1975. The Act sets out the Institute’s role, functions and governance arrangements.

We also produce research submissions to government enquiries and reviews.

AIFS is not a policy agency and is not involved in creating government policy. Therefore, there are no arrangements in place for members of the public to comment on specific policy proposals. However, we welcome comments, feedback or enquiries regarding AIFS work. You can get in touch with us via our Contact Us page.

We will review the operation of the IPS and this Plan annually, and information detailed under the IPS will be regularly monitored for currency and accuracy. The AIFS Business Continuity Services Team is responsible for the creation of the Plan and the monitoring of the IPS.
