This paper examines the use of child health services by mothers who took part in the Australian Institute of Family Studies' Early Childhood Study in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Child health services in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia are described and there is a brief account of the history of each. An overview of social trends in Australia is given to provide a contemporary framework in which to examine the use and helpfulness of child health services
