Overview

This two-part report is based on information collected for the Australian Living Standards Study from families living in Berwick, Box Hill, Melbourne and Werribee, Victoria. There were 331 families in the four areas where one or both of the parents received a Department of Social Security income support payment or the Additional Family Payment. These 'DSS families' are compared with non-DSS clients on a range of economic, employment, housing, health, transport, education, leisure and recreation, neighbourhood, family relationship and personal well-being indicators. Part 2 of the report provides information about: receipt of various benefits by families receiving the Basic Family Payment; DSS clients not in paid work; long-term or continuing illnesses and disabilities; and, unemployed parents.

  • Part 1. Living standards of DSS clients: comparison of DSS clients and non-DSS clients on a range of indicators of living standards used in the ALSS study by Helen Brownlee and Simon Gibbons
  • Part 2. Living standards of DSS clients by Helen Brownlee.
