Overview

The Community Research Project of the Department of Social Security examines new ways of improving the living standards of people with low incomes. In 1994, interested organisations were invited to submit proposals for community-based action research projects to trial innovative products or services. Eighty projects were trialled for 12 months and evaluated using case studies and quantitative surveys. This report analyses findings from the quantitative surveys, which measured the impact of the projects on living standards of participants. Thirty-one measures were evaluated, in the areas of labour force participation, reduced costs, personal well being, social participation, non-cash income, informal labour market participation and volunteering, and family relationships.
