Overview
This is the first of a new series of bulletins which assesses alternative policy options in the taxation and welfare transfer area. This bulletin makes use of computer programs, developed by the Institute of Family Studies, which use Australian Bureau of Statistics data from the 1981 Census and the 1978-79 income survey to examine the impact of policy changes on different sorts of families. Three tax options for the 1984-85 budget are examined: tax cuts through an increase in the tax threshold; tax cuts through an increase in the rebate for sole parents and dependent spouses with children; changing the tax 'steps' as well as thresholds and rebates.
