This article adds to what is known about gambling spending in Australia, and how this has changed over time. It draws on two large surveys from 1997-1998 and 2010-2011 to compare gambling participation, expenditure, proportion of disposable income spent, and rates of problem gambling. In contrast to some previous studies, this article finds that the number of Australians gambling has remained the same rather than declined, while average expenditure has risen, along with a shift from chance-based games to those that emphasised skill, such as sports betting and casino gaming.
