John De Maio

John De Maio is a Research Manager at the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) with more than 20 years' experience in survey research, evaluation and quantitative analysis. His expertise spans longitudinal studies, family law, settlement outcomes for humanitarian migrants, family and domestic violence, ageing and elder abuse, and government program evaluation.

Since joining AIFS in 2008, John has contributed to a wide range of nationally significant research projects, including evaluations of family law services and programs supporting families experiencing separation and family violence. He has led and contributed to research involving large-scale surveys, administrative data, qualitative interviews and complex mixed-method evaluations. 

Between 2013 and 2019, John managed the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) study, Australia's first longitudinal study of humanitarian migrants. His work focused on understanding settlement pathways and outcomes across domains including employment, education, health, wellbeing and social participation. He continues to contribute to research and policy development relating to humanitarian migration and refugee settlement. 

More recently, John has led and supported research examining elder abuse, family relationship services and other programs aimed at improving outcomes for Australian families and communities. He is particularly interested in the design and implementation of longitudinal studies, survey methodology, stakeholder engagement and translating research evidence into policy and practice. 
Prior to joining AIFS, John worked at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, where he undertook research examining the health, education and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and families.
