Australian Military and Veteran Families Study

The Australian Military and Veteran Families Study sought to understand family experiences of military life, how these shaped continued service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and how families’ transition from service can be improved.

The study focused on families of current ADF members and members who had left the ADF in the five years prior to the interview, and who had children under 18 or who were expecting or planning children. It explored how families juggled the demands of military and family life, how they made decisions about continued service in the ADF, and the supports they found useful at different stages of life and when transitioning out of the ADF.

AIFS undertook this research with the Department of Defence and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, who were also sponsors of the study. Fieldwork commenced in January 2022 and concluded in May 2022.

Findings were submitted to the Departments of Defence and Veterans’ Affairs and shared with a range of stakeholders to inform the design and delivery of policies, programs and services for military and veteran families.
