Australian Military and Veteran Families Study

Current project

This study will focus on families of current ADF members and members who have left the ADF in the last five years, who have or are planning children.

The Australian Military and Veteran Families Study seeks to understand family experiences of military life, how these shape continued service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and how families’ transition from service can be improved

The study will focus on families of current ADF members and members who have left the ADF in the last five years, who have children under 18 or who are expecting or planning children. It will explore how families juggle the demands of military and family life, how they make decisions about continued service in the ADF, and the supports they find useful at different stages of life and when transitioning out of the ADF.

The project will be conducted over approximately 18 months and finish in the 2022-23 financial year.

AIFS will share the insights from this study with the Department of Defence and Department of Veterans’ Affairs, who are sponsoring the study, to potentially inform the design of policies, programs and services for military and veteran families. Key findings will also be shared with research participants and other military and defence force family forums, in a way that does not reveal the identity of individual participants.
