Overview

Available data indicate that the Indigenous suicide rate in Australia is about double that of the non-Indigenous population.

This resource sheet reviews policies and programs that aim to prevent suicide and suicidal behaviour. It assesses prevention policies and programs implemented in both remote and non-remote parts of Australia and overseas, considering their strengths, limitations and their actual, or likely, effectiveness in relation to Indigenous Australians. The resource sheet outlines what works, what doesn't, and what further research is needed.

This report was produced for the Closing the Gap Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse was a Council of Australian Governments’ initiative jointly funded by all Australian Governments. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Family Studies was funded from 2009 to 2014 to deliver the Clearinghouse.
