Overview

This report provides a review of the international literature on the measurement of living standards, including poverty measurement. It examines the different types and combination of 'resource' and 'way of life' indicators used in measuring living standards, if and how the contribution of services and locational factors to living standards has been addressed, and the treatment of subjective factors in the assessment of living standards. The report concludes with a description of the conceptual framework developed for the Australian Living Standards Study, which is being conducted by the Australian Institute of Family Studies on behalf of the Commonwealth government.
