Find out how to apply for access to Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) study data for research purposes.
Eligibility for data access
You can apply to access BNLA data if you are:
- a researcher or post-graduate student, and
- affiliated with a university, recognised research institute, government department or agency, peak body, or not-for-profit organisation.
Data are available to research projects that:
- serve the public good
- are scientifically and ethically sound
- contribute to the knowledge base on humanitarian migrants.
Conditions of use
Approved BNLA data users must abide by the Department of Social Services (DSS) data access policy and terms and conditions. This is to ensure the privacy of study participants and the protection of data.

How to apply
To apply to access BNLA:
- register for an account with Dataverse
- read the data access use guidelines
- download and sign the Confidentiality Deed Poll
- if applicable, complete the Longitudinal Studies Data Holdings Form
- email the Confidentiality Deed Poll and Data Holdings form (if applicable) to [email protected] and [email protected]
Application review
The Department of Social Services (DSS) will review your data access request and provide approval based on eligibility, research purpose and adherence to data access guidelines.
