About Naarm (Melbourne)

Welcome to Melbourne

The AIFS Conference 2026 will be held in Melbourne, one of Australia’s most vibrant, creative and liveable cities. Known for its strong research and education sector, Melbourne is a natural home for a conference focused on evidence, policy and practice that supports families and communities.

Melbourne brings together world‑class universities, research institutes, government agencies and community organisations, creating a rich environment for learning, collaboration and debate.

You can expect a city that is easy to navigate, culturally diverse and well set up for major conferences, with excellent public transport, walkable precincts and a thriving food and arts scene.

Located on the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra River), Melbourne also offers space to pause, connect and reflect – whether that’s along the river, in nearby parklands, or in the many cultural spaces that sit alongside the conference program.

A place of connection and culture

Beyond the conference sessions, Melbourne offers a wide range of experiences for visitors. From laneways and galleries to theatres, museums and sporting events, the city reflects a long tradition of storytelling, creativity and exchange.

Melbourne is also a gateway to broader Victorian regions, including coastal landscapes, wine regions and cultural destinations, making it an appealing place to extend your stay before or after the conference.

Visit the Visit Melbourne website to explore experiences across the city.

Traditional Owners

Melbourne is known by its Traditional Owners as Naarm, a significant meeting place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for tens of thousands of years.

The city is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi‑wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, who are the Traditional Custodians of much of the land and waterways on which Melbourne now stands, including the Birrarung (Yarra River). We recognise the ongoing connection of the Wurundjeri Woi‑wurrung people to Country, culture and community, and acknowledge that this land has always been a place of gathering, knowledge sharing and care.

The AIFS Conference 2026 will respectfully acknowledge Country throughout the event, in line with AIFS commitments to demonstrating respect towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
