This fact sheet is based on findings from the Domestic and family violence and parenting: Mixed method insights into impact and support needs project. The project examined the impact of domestic and family violence (DFV) on parenting capacity and parent–child relationships in Australia.

Components of the project included a literature review; the use of datasets from Growing Up in Australia Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) and the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) Family Pathways studies and a set of 50 qualitative in-depth interviews with women who had experienced DFV.

The fact sheet covers levels of inter-parental conflict between separated and non-separated parents, the occurrence of DFV before and after separation, the forms of DFV experienced and their continued impact after separation.

The findings point to the continued need for support after separation for women and children who have experiences of DFV.
