Overview
Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' 1982 survey on the incomes of individuals and income units, in conjunction with the regularly updated poverty lines published by Melbourne University's Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, this paper makes estimates of the number of income units and individuals with income less than the poverty line and of changes since 1978-79 in the number and proportions of different types of income units in poverty. States that the figures suggest that there is an urgent need for action to reverse the trends towards increasing inequality and hardship, particularly for families with children.
