This report examines the relationship between disadvantage experienced by young people aged 15 - 19 and the family context in which they live. To what extent does disadvantage among young people reflect disadvantage in their parents' generation? Is disadvantage for young people linked to where they live in the metropolitan area or is it related to personal characteristics of the young person? What is the nature of economic transfers between parents and young people in the context of disadvantaged young people? The report is divided into three parts. Part A examines the determinants of disadvantage for young people using a statistical approach. Part B records several case studies of disadvantaged young persons. Part C looks at patterns of economic transfers between parents and young persons.
