Some of the barriers to reporting and to disclosure of abuse are that in many instances parents or caregivers may be the source of harm, therefore the abuse remains hidden within the context in which it occurred, whether it’s the home environment or in the context of an organisation. Where the abuse is outside the home – particularly the case with sexual abuse – parents may be unaware the child has been abused and so will not report that concern. Other people with whom that child or young person is coming in contact may not be aware they have been abused.
