Overview
Genuine engagement with Indigenous people is a key aspect in overcoming Indigenous disadvantage. This issues paper examines the Australian and international research evidence on how such engagement can be developed and maintained, including the conditions that enable governments and others to engage effectively with Indigenous communities, and how these conditions can be enhanced for effective engagement.
It outlines what works, what doesn't, and what further research is needed.
This paper is complemented by the resource sheet Engagement with Indigenous communities in key sectors, which focuses on Australian research from the early childhood, health, and environmental and natural resource management sectors.
This report was produced for the Closing the Gap Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse was a Council of Australian Governments’ initiative jointly funded by all Australian Governments. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Family Studies was funded from 2009 to 2014 to deliver the Clearinghouse.
