Overview

Housing has long been recognised as a key social determinant of health, and interventions aimed at improving housing conditions can also improve physical health, mental health and social wellbeing.

This resource sheet examines the links between housing quality and health outcomes, the mechanisms by which housing influences health outcomes, and a range of practices that can improve the condition of Indigenous housing. It reviews what works, what doesn't, and what further research is needed. Note, this review only looks at housing quality: housing affordability, home ownership, and security of tenure are also associated with health but are outside the scope of this study.

This report was produced by AIFS staff for the Closing the Gap Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse was a Council of Australian Governments’ initiative jointly funded by all Australian Governments. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Family Studies was funded from 2009 to 2014 to deliver the Clearinghouse.
