Quick exit and safe browsing
Our quick exit banner
A quick exit banner allows you to leave a webpage immediately. It may be useful if you do not want someone else to see what you are looking at.
On our site, the dark grey quick exit banner appears at the top of selected pages that contain sensitive content. It looks like this.
Clicking anywhere on the quick exit banner or pressing the ESC key redirects the page to bom.gov.au and removes the page from your browser history.
Using the quick exit banner does not delete your full browser history. This means that if someone else looks at your browser history, they will be able to see which webpages you have visited. You can delete this history in a separate step.
How to browse safely
When you search online or visit a website, your web browser saves a record of this activity. This is known as your browsing history.
Common web browsers include Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari and Mozilla Firefox. Browsing history can make it easier to return to websites you’ve visited before, but it can also be seen by other people who use the same device.
Clear your browsing history
You can delete your browsing history through your browser’s settings. Find step‑by‑step instructions for:
- Google Chrome (including Android devices)
- Safari on Mac or on iPhones and iPads
- Microsoft Edge
- Mozilla Firefox.
Use private or incognito browsing
Most browsers also let you browse in Private or Incognito mode. When this mode is turned on, your browser does not save:
- browsing history
- cookies
- site data.
This can help reduce the amount of information stored on your device.
Tips for staying safe online
To help protect your privacy online, consider the following:
- use strong passwords
- change your passwords regularly
- browse in private or incognito mode where possible
- clear your browser history after use
- use public devices (such as at a library), and always clear the browser history before you finish.
