Meet the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) research team.
Program lead
John van Kooy is the Program lead for BNLA. He oversees the management of the:
- content
- methodology
- fieldwork activities
- data management and releases
- analyses
- publications.
He also engages closely with the study's external stakeholders including government agencies, expert and community advisory groups, research communities and institutes, and suppliers.

Research and analysis team
Our research and analysis team conducts analyses of BNLA data and prepares various reports, publications and conference presentations.
The research and analysis team includes:
- David Marshall, Research Fellow (former team member)
- Mulu Woldegiorgis, Senior Research Officer (former team member)
- Caitlyn Stevenson, Data Manager (former team member).
Advisory groups
The BNLA study team worked with 2 advisory groups before wave 1 to ensure the design of the study would:
- help build an evidence base to inform policies and programs
- meet the needs of humanitarian migrants, host communities and government priorities.
The Survey Reference Group included Australian Government officials and external stakeholders who contributed to the study’s:
- data collection
- methodology
- content
- approach.
The Technical Advisory Group included experts in refugee resettlement and longitudinal survey methods and analysis.
In subsequent waves, the 2 advisory groups were consolidated into one Advisory Group that met between waves to discuss study content and approach.
